Accelerated Reader

Students in grade 9 Academic English and grade 9, 10, and 11 AP English courses participate in the Accelerated Reader program, through their English classes. Students read books of their own choice and at their own level, and then answer content-based quizzes based on the books. Successful completion of quizzes accumulates points, which then contribute to the overall English grade.

The Accelerated Reader program encourages reading comprehension and critical-thinking skills, and promotes the love of reading. Students have the opportunity to read books that interest them, outside the required course readings.  Participation in the program can assist in preparing students for literacy tests.

Final Date for taking AR Quizzes

To be determined by English Department.

 How does it work?

  • * Students choose a book to read and then read the book independently during English classes and at home.
  • * When a student has finished reading a book, he or she requests permission from his/her English teacher to take an AR test. Students may take tests during class time, at lunch, or before/after school, depending on the teacher.
  • * Students come to the library to take the short multiple choice quiz on a designated computer
  • * After completing the quiz, students will receive a print out of point related information; this form is signed by library staff and returned to the classroom teacher.
  • * Teachers receive periodic reports on the results of their students and keep track of points.

 Rules

  • * The borrowing period for AR books is two weeks.  Books may be renewed once.
  • * Up to 5 library books may be borrowed at a time.
  • * To take an AR quiz students must have their student card and a note from their English teacher. Books must be returned and fines must be paid.
  • * Quizzes will be taken independently under the supervision of library staff.
  • * Students are not allowed to refer to the book while taking the quiz.
  • * Students may take a quiz only once.  Failed quizzes may not be repeated.
  • * Full points are given for a perfect score.
  • * Pro-rated points are given for scores of 60-99%, depending on the number of questions.
  • * Due dates and overdue fines apply to all books.

 Tips for Success

  • * Choose something you will be interested in reading, not just something with lots of points.
  • * Start with shorter books with fewer points.
  • * If you do not like the book you have chosen, return it and choose another.
  • * Read at home and at school.
  • * Finish the entire book.
  • * Take the quiz soon after finishing the book. Don’t wait too long or you may forget the content and details of the book.
  • * Do not try to take quizzes based on just watching a movie based on a book (such as Twilight or Harry Potter). You will most likely fail the AR Quiz
